National Landscape of the Year

Project Overview

Vaughan, Ontario

Over the course of 20 years, various properties and four design and builds, the owners of the National Landscape of the Year have become loyal Tumber clients. For this property, their vision was of a landscape that integrated formal elements into a Muskoka cottage country environment.

To make their vision a reality, two major challenges had to be overcome. The first was the three-story house sat on top of a hill that to passersby may have appeared ostentatious. To soften the look of the home and blend it into nature, surrounding grade modulations were changed and large trees were planted at its entrance to create the perspective of the house being nestled into the landscape.

The second was their backyard being entirely consumed by a previously installed septic system. After removing and relocating the former system, the majority of the backyard was now available for the installation of the client’s dream landscape.

From the first page to the final climax, this natural story book landscape takes visitors on a journey as one feature unfolds, revealing the next piece in their adventure.
